When to buy an Android tablet and when to buy a Kindle Fire

I’ve been using my Kindle Fire more and more over the last week, and my wife recently got hers as well. I’m getting familiar with a machine that’s not half bad, but also not perfect.

See also: 12 things that kinda suck about the Kindle Fire

Ever since I wrote those two articles, I’ve apparently become the go-to guy among my friends and neighbors for holiday tablet purchases. The “should I get an iPad or should I get a Kindle” question is easy, because they are such different devices.

The one that I’m asked even more, though, is whether to get an Android tablet like the Galaxy Tab or, well, an Android-based tablet like the Kindle Fire. The confusion is that since they’re both based on Android, what’s the right choice?

So, let’s clarify things a bit. The Kindle Fire is to Android like Mac OS X is to UNIX. The underlying OS for the Kindle Fire is Android (which, okay, is based on Linux, which itself is based on UNIX, sigh). But unless you hack your Kindle, you’ll never see a traditional Android user interface.

So, then, let’s get that over-with. You can buy a $199 Kindle Fire, hack it, and run a generic Android distribution on it, and it then becomes something of an Android tablet. But you have to want to do the hacking, have the time, have the technical chops, and not mind if you break stuff. Basically, if you want to tinker fer cheap, then the Kindle Fire might be fun.

Really, though, the question of Android vs. Kindle becomes more of what you want to use your tablet for and how much you want to spend. While the Kindle Fire is pretty inexpensive, it has some serious functional limitations. It doesn’t have Bluetooth, so an external keyboard is either unlikely or very hacky. It doesn’t have a camera. It has relatively little storage and RAM. And, unless you hack it, it doesn’t have access to the main Android app store.

A typical (if more expensive) Android tablet has all those things. So, if you want a tablet for general purpose use, if you want to take it on the road to write or edit video or photos, you’ll want something with more power than the Kindle. Essentially, if you want to produce content or have a general-purpose tablet, you’ll want an Android tablet, and not the Kindle.

If, on the other hand, you want a tablet to consume content, and especially if you’re very comfortable with the Amazon ecosystem like my wife and me, then you may want the Kindle Fire. In other words, if you want a backlit Kindle you can read in the dark, that’ll also do some other stuff, then buy the Kindle Fire.

We have an iPad. We don’t use it as much as most families, because I do most of my couch-reading on a large-screen HDTV. I’m also writing this on that screen. But my wife uses the iPad on the treadmill (she says it’s the perfect treadmill tablet), she uses it to watch knitting videos, and I use it to power my teleprompter during interviews so I can look straight at the person I’m interviewing, rather than at a monitor.

By contrast, I use the Kindle Fire in bed, to read and occasionally watch Netflix videos. I also, sometimes, use it to carry around and read appliance repair manuals PDFs in one hand, while holding a tool in the other, trying to get something or other working in our new house. The Kindle is light enough for easy one-handed use, which is great for reading repair manuals.

So, assuming you’re happily in the Android ecosystem (vs, say, the iOS world), get a Kindle Fire if you want a cheap consumption device, and get a real Android tablet if you want to do real work with Android.

Letter: On ‘Sunda Wiwitan religion’

I refer to an article “Baduy people demand Sunda Wiwitan acknowledged as religion”, (The Jakarta Post Online. Nov. 29).

Indonesia is always the best on the paper (in written form) but the worst in reality (in daily practice). Indonesia is always controlling the religion of people rather than the religion from God.

This is called organized religion that is administratively acknowledged. Whether they are aware of it or not, all organized religions are imported. They all come from outside Nusantara (Indonesia today).

What the Baduy people embraced so far is an indigenous faith or original belief that has made them live peacefully and prosperously. Furthermore, I have never heard that the Baduy people like troubling other people (outsiders of the Baduy tribe) concerning to the maters of daily life.

What is the use of having a religion and feeling like a very religious man but if our daily acts do not reflect our religiosity?

Conscious or not, many Indonesians feel proud of being religious, but they (mostly) always destroy and make trouble for other people especially those outside their religion. Briefly, all of the corrupt Indonesian people are from organized religions. I believe that nobody from the Baduy tribe commits corruption.

The Baduy people always respect and honor their own traditions from generation to generation.

So if the government of Indonesia really respects and honors its own cultures and traditions, it must allow the Baduy people to choose their own faith.

As Indonesia is a multicultural country as stated by SBY in his speech at an international forum, we must prove this in our daily practice. The President must approve what the Baduy have requested. And SBY must apply what is stated the the Amended 1945 Constitution in the article of 28 E verses:

1. Everyone has freedom to embrace a religion and worship according to that religion.

2. Everyone has freedom to holding their own faith, express thoughts and acts, according to their inner heart.

And in the article of 29, verse 2, it is stated that the state gives freedom to each individual to embrace a religion and worship according to their own religion and their own faith.

Thus, from these verses, Yudhoyono must allow the Baduy people to choose their own faith.

And I am sure all tribes in Indonesia have their own cultures, beliefs and faiths.

Finally, the organized religions should no longer be handled by the government. If possible, dissolve the Religious Affairs Ministry (the dream of the late former president “Gus Dur”). Can you?

wartawan. Drogba menjadi kunci kemenangan Chelsea atas Valencia di
Stamford Bridge, Selasa (6/12). Ia memborong dua dari tiga gol yang
mengantarkan timnya lolos ke 16 besar Liga Champions.

Drogba
terlambat memulai karirnya di jenjang profesional. "Saya mengawali
permainan di level atas terlambat. Saya berusia 25 tahun ketika
mengawali permainan pertama di Liga Champions. Saya merasa gembira,
saya merasa enak bermain di lapangan. Saya benar-benar menikmatinya,
menikmati sepak bola. Ketika kami menang seperti sekarang ini, saya
benar-benar gembira," katanya.

Striker Pantai Gading itu sudah
mencetak empat gol dalam empat pertandingan. Kendati kontrak pemain 33

kontraknya. "Masa depan saya tidak terlalu penting. Bila waktunya
tiba, kami akan membicarakannya. Tapi sekarang ini, rasanya kami belum
membutuhkannya," jelas Drogba.

Pemain sayap Juan Mata, yang
mengumpan sehingga lahir dua gol Drogba, mengatakan, ia menginginkan
pemain depan itu tetap berada di Chelsea. "Didier adalah striker
super. Ia kuat dan cepat, ia melahirkan gol dan membantu membuat gol.
Ia amat penting bagi kami dan ketika melawan Valencia ia membuktikan
hal itu," katanya.(Ant/DOR)

Are you embarrassed by your TV? New Sony survey says one out of three of you are.

A new survey shows why so many people are snapping up HDTVs for the holidays. Sony’s first TV Intimacy Poll finds that a majority of Americans are dissatisfied with their current sets.

As the name of the poll suggests, the results are couched in “relationship” speak. So 53 percent of respondents would like to “break up” with their current television, with nearly a third of them saying that the source of their dissatisfaction is how small the screen is (or as Sony’s press release puts it, “Size Matters in the Living Room Too”).

Another 31 percent admitted that they were “embarrassed” by their TV’s age, probably because it’s an old tube-based set.

Despite all of the dissatisfaction, 62 percent of respondents said that they watched three or more hours of television, and 94 percent view programming every day. A whopping 98 percent of Americans owns sets, according to the survey.

Are you “embarrassed” by your television? Are you planning to buy a new HDTV to get over your embarrassment? Let us know in the Talkback section.

SBY asks citizens to avoid religious-based violence

SBY asks citizens to avoid religious-based violence

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the Indonesian people not to use violence in dealing with religious differences.

“We should not use force, let alone violence towards those who are different from us,” Yudhoyono said in his speech during the 150th anniversary of Huria Kristen Batak Protestant (HKBP) church at the Bung Karno stadium on Sunday.

He said that every religion taught noble values and kindness, which had become the basis of developing the nation’s character, Antara news wire reported.

He said Indonesia’s religious diversity and culture should not be the cause of disharmony and disunity.

“The diversity of our nation is a wealth that we should be grateful for,” said Yudhoyono.

He asked all Indonesian people to respect and honor each other, even though they all lived with differences.
